What is AI customer support?
AI customer support helps customers with a defined service request. An agent may answer from approved content, retrieve customer information, perform an allowed action or hand an unresolved case to your team. Writing a draft for a staff member and completing a customer request are different workflows.
Separate questions from actions. Explaining a returns policy can use a knowledge source; checking an order needs access to the relevant record. Issuing a refund introduces permissions and an approval policy. Confirm the exact task and tariff rather than assuming every advertised AI feature covers the same work.
Choose the channels and handoff
Start with where customers contact you and where staff work today. Website chat, email and messaging channels can have different integration and charging requirements. An agent should fit the intended support channel and the place where a human continues the conversation.
If you already use a helpdesk or store platform, check the named connection, the information available to the agent and what happens when it cannot finish the request. Retaining your current helpdesk and moving to a different inbox are different buying decisions.
Use customer inquiries as the planning workload and count human team members separately. An inquiry may involve several messages, a lookup or multiple actions. Provider billing can use credits, conversations, outcomes or other units; one inquiry is not automatically one billable unit.
Before choosing, decide who maintains knowledge sources, which actions require approval and how unresolved cases reach a person. Set the task and inquiry volume above, then inspect the named products and tariff requirements in the comparison. An AI subtotal can exclude helpdesk, channel or setup costs.
